How to Navigate the GIS Community Mapping Web Site

The Community Mapping web site provides the user with easy, straightforward tools to navigate, view, and browse City GIS data.

The upper left of the web page is the layer control.

Data Layers

The top row contains backdrop layers. Select which type of background you would like to use on your map.

* The Topo layer provides a hill shade showing the terrain environment.

* The Imagery layer displays an aerial image of the City.

* To turn off the backdrop select Topo/Imagery Off.

The second row contains the Drainage layers, City layers and the Legend for the layers used in the map.

 

Primary and Additional Layers

* To turn on or off a layer select the name or the box. (multiple layers can be selected and used in the map.)

* To add layers to your map: Select the pull down arrow on Primary Layers (for drainage data) or Additional City Layers. This opens a list of available layers. To add or remove these layers from the map, check on or off the box next to the layer name. To close the layer list reselect the layers pull down or the up arrow button.

View Legend

The legend contains the symbology that is used for each layer. To view the legend Select the View Legend box. To remove the legend, re-select the View Legend box.

Vicinity Map

The lower left of the web page is the vicinity map. The vicinity map shows the mapped area in context to the overall City and County limits. The vicinity map can be turned on or off by selecting the up/down arrow.

Search By Search By

Located in the upper right is an easy to use search tool. This contains the 3 simple searches: Search by parcel APN number, Hydraulic Node number and Drainage feature ID. Pick the search type, enter the value and then select the GO! button. This will zoom to and highlight the item being searched for. To clear the highlighted item select the Clear button.

The Information tool allows the user to obtain detailed information about the drainage, centerline and parcel layers as well as view linked street improvement as-built plans.

 

Data View

To access this information the user will select the Information Tool then using the left mouse button select the particular item on the main map. A “View Data” box will appear with detailed information on the selected item on the left of the screen.

Sometimes multiple layers will be selected. In the View Data box a list of the layer will appear and the user can select which layer to view its information. The information will be displayed in the Results below area.

As-Built Viewer

Select the Information tool icon and select a street centerline. If there is a street improvement as-built for that selected segment of street a dialog box will appear at the bottom of the main map that lists the as-builts for that segment of street. To view the as-built select the drawing pdf. The pdf will open in another window and can be viewed and printed out. (If the pdf is a multiple page document the pdf will open up to the specific page in the plan that applies to that street segment.)

 

Navigation Tools Full Screen

To maneuver around your map there are 7 basic tools as well as an advanced tool button.

Zoom In

Zoom in tool: To enlarge/zoom into an area of interest on the main map select the Zoom In tool. Set the cursor on the map and select the left mouse button, hold down and drag the cursor creating a red window box. Release the left mouse button and the main map will resize.

Zoom Out

Zoom out tool: To reduce/zoom out of an area of interests on the main map select the Zoom Out tool. Set the cursor on the map and select the left mouse button, hold down and drag the cursor creating a red window box. Release the left mouse button and the main map will resize.

Pan

Pan: To move the main map up/down or to the left or right select the Pan button. The cursor will change from an arrow to a hand. Select the left mouse button and hold down. The map will automatically move in that direction.

Advanced Tool

Advanced tools: Select this button to access the advanced tools (See Section below on Advanced tools).

Zoom to Original Extents

Zoom to Original Extents: To zoom back to the original extent of the map select this button.

Full Screen Tool

Full Screen: Select this button to maximize the screen on the computer monitor.

Help Tool

Help: This button opens the information document on how to use this web site.

 

Advanced Tools

The Advanced tool allows for additional navigation and has the tools to measure area and distances.

Advanced Navigation Tools

The tool on the far left allows the user to zoom in and zoom out on a centered point.

The circular tool allows the user to pan and rotate the map. By selecting the encircled arrows the user can pan N, S, E or W at a preset distance. By selecting the bars between the circles the user can rotate the map. (the boxes arrow to the left resets the drawing to N and the world icon to the right zooms to the extent of the map).

Measuring Distances or Area

Distance: To determine the linear distance in feet, select the Distance button. The user will create a line by using the left mouse button and clicking on the map (at least 2 points). A red line will draw. Double click the left button to finish. The length(s) of the line results will appear just below the Distance button.

Area: To determine the acreage and perimeter of an area, select the Area button. The user will create a polygon by using the left mouse button. Click and draw on the map (at least 3 points). (A blue polygon will draw) Double click the left button to finish. The area results will appear just below the Area Button.
